Junior Division

About the Programs

The Junior Division offers year-round dance training for students ages 3 to 17, ranging from introductory classes for preschoolers to curriculum-based programs preparing students for professional careers in dance. Our staff encourages students to let their creativity and individuality shine while nurturing a love of dance.

Ages 3 to 6 

First Steps & Bounding Boys

Creative movement classes that emphasize spatial and musical awareness as students are introduced to basic dance vocabulary, while also exploring their own creativity. Classes have live accompaniment and are led by an instructional team dedicated to fostering a sense of fun and joy.  

Ages 7 to 11

Ailey Athletic Boys 

A scholarship-based program aimed at giving young boys the highest caliber training in multiple dance techniques. Classes are structured to develop strength, flexibility, and coordination along with the discipline, focus, and drive found in professional athletes and dancers. 

Ages 7 to 17 

Pre-Professional Program 

A diverse, curriculum-based program for students from beginner to pre-professional level. Designed to develop well-rounded young dancers, this program offers a graded curriculum of ballet, enriched by several other dance techniques. Scholarships are available for students ages 15 to 17 for this program. 

Ages 12 to 15

Summer Intensive 

A four-week program for intermediate to advanced students to immerse themselves in a variety of dance techniques and learn repertory for a final performance. The Summer Intensive takes place at The Joan Weill Center for Dance in the heart of New York City's Theater District.  

Grade Levels 9 to 10 

Ailey/Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) 

A joint program with the PPAS high school in New York. The curriculum provides a solid foundation in fulfilling the requirements of the New York State Regents' Diploma, while preparing students for careers as professional dancers.
