About the Program
Curriculum
Alvin Ailey encouraged multidisciplinary training that produces versatile dancers. The Professional Division Summer Intensive students attend classes Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm. The weekly curriculum of 15 classes includes a daily ballet class, a daily modern technique class of either Horton or Graham-based modern, and a supplemental class in another technique. Students also attend workshops where they learn original repertory from a guest artist. The summer intensive culminates with performances at the Ailey Citigroup Theater.
Students are assigned to a class level based on their skill and proficiency, determined during their audition.

Each student at The Ailey School is placed in levels according to their individual proficiency in ballet, Horton, and Graham techniques. Levels are determined by the School’s Directors at the audition, or by the department chairpersons during the first week of the fall term. Students are advised that levels at The School may not correspond to the levels at their prior schools. The Ailey School has seven levels of ballet, four levels of Horton, and four levels of Graham. Pointe, partnering, and men’s ballet are offered to students in Ballet IV or higher. Students are placed in jazz levels according to their ballet levels.
