Choreographed by the Canadian choreographer Brian McDonald in 1962, this piece is a dynamic, athletic mating ritual for fourteen dancers set to music by Paul Creston. The work fuses ballet and modern dance, giving the work a different feel depending on the company performing it. The New York Times wrote, “A ballet company like the Harkness danced it on toe and in ballet slippers, giving it a classic look. The Ailey company gives it an athletic flavor. The women are barefoot. The men, in what look like track shoes and knee pads, come flying in and tackling an unseen force as they hit the deck.”
