Alvin Ailey choreographed Shaken Angels for ballet dancers Bonnie Mathis and Dennis Wayne of Dennis Wayne and Dancers in 1972. The work was commissioned for the New York Dance Festival. Set to rock music, the dance was inspired by drug use, a theme that occupied Mr. Ailey during the ’70s, as in his work Flowersabout Janis Joplin.
