John Butler’ Seven Journeys was his sixth ballet for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Butler used the music of three contemporary composers for the eclectic score and fused dramatic ballet with modern movements. The work depicts an initiation rite in seven parts—seven journeys to adulthood. An ensemble of celebrants observes as a woman and two men guide the lead woman into the ceremony.
