Using the techno/electronic and jazz sounds of an original score by Rolf Ellmer, Francesca Harper crafts a daring kinetic experience for 10 dancers pulsing with energy and vitality. Dedicated ''to those who stand up for human dignity and freedom,” the work is an abstract projection of a future world where freedom of speech is ignored. Words projected onto the backdrop—such as “credible,” “fear,” tortured,” “detained,” “beaten,” “speak”—serve as thematic motifs. Theatrically, Apex draws comparisons to the nonlinear and fragmented mixed-media pieces that William Forsythe created for his company, the Frankfurt Ballet, with which Harper danced.
