Judith Jamison an unparalleled force in American dance, a powerhouse performer, and a visionary leader. Every person who had met her or seen her dance, even briefly, was affected by her beauty, grace, love, and sincerity. This Black History Month, Ailey Extension honors Judith Jamison’s lasting contributions to AILEY and the arts.

Learn movement from Judith Jamison’s praised choreography that marked her as a promising dancemaker, Divining

Set to the music of Kimati Dinizulu and Monti Ellison, Divining builds on a variety of dance idioms from throughout Africa to create a pulsating, striking work utilizing polyrhythms. Created in 1984, five years before Ms. Jamison’s ascent to artistic director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The New York Times gave special praise to her “invention of movement shapes and movement quality that gives [Divining] a fascinating originality.”

This workshop is led by former Ailey dancer Khalia Campbell
