Join world-renowned former Ailey dancer Sarita Allen for her signature Ailey Classics workshop in celebration of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s performances at New York City Center.
This year, participants will learn excerpts of choreography from Judith Jamison’s iconic Emmy Award-winning Hymn, a tribute to Alvin Ailey that illuminates his humanity and the dancers’ unique qualities through personal recollections. Ms. Allen will be joined by other Hymn original cast members who will speak on their connection to the work.
All levels of dancers ages 16+ are welcome.
About Sarita Allen
Hand-picked by Alvin Ailey, Sarita Allen was an original member of Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, now Ailey II, before joining Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater a year later. In her first season with the Company, Mr. Ailey created lead roles for Allen in two Ellington premieres: The Mooche, opposite Ailey veterans Judith Jamison, Estelle Spurlock, and Sara Yarborough; and Night Creature. Allen went on to have a significant tenure with Ailey starring in leading roles and outstanding performances including galas at The Paris Opera, the Acropolis, the Great Pyramids of Giza, The Kennedy Center, and at the White House for two U.S. presidents.
