Alvin Ailey adapted his ballet Been Here and Gone, with African singers and songs, to create a new ballet specifically for the International Music Festival in Rio de Janeiro in September 1963. He created this work during the first year of his close working relationship with Duke Ellington, who encouraged Mr. Ailey to further embrace African music and culture in his ballets.
