Mood Indigo, a suite of three duets depicting embattled lovers, was Robert Battle’s first ballet commission for AILEY. Former Ailey II Artistic Director Sylvia Waters commissioned Battle after seeing his work at Parsons Dance, where Battle used to be a company member. David Parsons liked Mood Indigo so much after its Ailey II premiere that he commissioned the work for his own company—Battle coming full circle. Battle would choreograph his first piece on Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater four years later before becoming the company’s third artistic director.
