Commissioned by the Women’s Choreography Initiative established by Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison, Mnemonic Verses uses alluring imagery to explore relationships and power struggles between women and men. An impressionistic rite of passage, the ballet uses the Kronos Quartet's recording of Jon Hassell's "Pano da Costa," a mix of percussion and strings that provides enough rhythmic variety for Monte to contrast sharp slicing gestures with the undulating movement that matches the score's Middle Eastern sound.
