Metallics, choreographed by Paul Sanasardo with music by Henry Cowell and Henk Badings, is a trio between one woman dressed in black and a male-female couple dressed in white. A set of hanging metal tubes separates the dancers, who dance in front of, behind, and through the set. Through a dramatic juxtaposition between the couple and the solo, Sanasardo explores alienation and conflict between two worlds or emotional time zones. Metallics originally premiered at the YMHA in 1964 and became a part of the Company’s repertory in 1968.
