Les Noces by Lar Lubovitch was originally choreographed for Lar Lubovitch Dance Company in 1976. Set to music by Igor Stravinsky, Les Noces tells the story of a Russian peasant wedding, a ritual of social cohesion. The New York Times wrote of the 1976 performance that the ballet “might be called the daydream of a choreographer who longs to stage this Stravinsky cantata about a Russian wedding with a cast of thousands but must settle for a cast of 10.” The ballet was set on Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1979.
