Impinyuza by Dr. Pearl Primus was originally choreographed in 1952. It is a dance for men based on the Royal Dancers of Burundi, who dance to the music of African drums. Dr. Primus set the work on the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dancers in 1990. Before each rehearsal, with the dancers lying on the floor, she would tell a story about Africa to inspire them.
