Blueshift is a depiction of urban youth and urban lifestyles, with décor by painter Romare Bearden and music selections by Earth, Wind & Fire; Herbie Hancock; Grover Washington, Jr.; John Robie; Nona Hendryx; and Fonda Rae. A sequel to Beatty’s earlier Stack-Up, Blueshift depicts the same street people from Stack-Up the day after—rehabilitated and wiser. The title comes from a term in astronomy that has to do with measuring time and distance in an expanding universe.
