In 1958, Alvin Ailey’s Ariette Oubliee, a choreographic fantasy pantomime, was performed by three leading dancers: Mr. Ailey portrayed the Man; Don Price, the Clown; and Carmen de Lavallade, the Moon. They were accompanied by a corps of five additional dancers. The work is a love story, lyrical and sad where the moon is the object of the man’s love. With a song by Claude Debussy, it was performed to live music at the 92nd Street YM-YWHA in Mr. Ailey’s second ever concert of his choreography.
