Dianne McIntyre’s concept behind Ancestral Voices was to correlate Black history with contemporary Black culture. Constructed around the four elements—earth, water, air, and fire—the ballet is an abstraction of an African ritual with scenic designs and costumes by renowned artist Romare Bearden and music by jazz pioneer Cecil Taylor.
