As a significant element of Ballroom culture, voguing is as much about competition and besting a rival as it is about self-expression, identity formation, and building chosen families.
Luz Theodyssey is a Dominican American artist from the Bronx. She began her formal training at the age of twelve in ballet, modern, jazz, and tap at the Bronx Dance Academy, with continued training at the Dance Theatre of Harlem from 2009–2012 before studying at SUNY Purchase College. In 2018, she debuted at her first ball and has continued to dance and compete in a variety of categories ever since. Theodyssey has starred in campaigns for Be True Nike, Adidas, and Jeremy Scott, and appeared on seasons 1 and 2 of Ryan Murphy’s Pose. You can catch her most recent television work on the 2022 season of Legendary, the HBO Max hit voguing show, where she placed as the semi-finalist house in the final two competing teams.
