Join Ailey Extension as we celebrate the centennial of Black History Month and showcase the impact of Black culture on dance! As Black culture shifted during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s, swing dancing was born in the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem as a form of self-expression alongside jazz music. The Lindy Hop soon found its way to the Jim Crow South in Atlanta where it became an act of resistance and an assertion of freedom against discrimination.

Step into the heartbeat of Black history as the dynamic Lindy Hop duo Sammy & Candy bring Lindy Hop, jazz, and jazz vernacular—the dances that turned joy into resistance and community into power—into the studio during this special workshop. You’ll jump, move, and groove through breakaways, rhythms, and swingouts that Black dancers used to claim space, celebrate identity, and push back against oppression. Feel the joy in the groove, discover strength in the truth, and rise into the power of resistance. No partner is necessary, and all levels are welcome!
