The Dunham technique was created by internationally renowned American dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham following her anthropological studies in the Caribbean and parts of Africa. Katherine Dunham created a dance form through her dance practice, bringing together Caribbean and African ritual and social dance with American concert dance into what has become a signature codified modern dance technique.

Throughout this workshop, former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dancer April Berry will lead students through the methodology and dynamic movement vocabulary of the Dunham technique. Students will also have the unique opportunity to learn the history of the distinctive artistic and personal relationship of two cultural icons, Katherine Dunham and Alvin Ailey, from someone who worked with them both.

This workshop will feature live music with master drum artists Michael Mustafa Ulmer and Hasan Bakr.
