The last thing you want to do is rush on your audition day and come into the room cold. Plan to arrive at your audition at least 30 minutes early to give yourself time to check in, get the lay of the studio, and properly warm up.
Wear form-fitting simple dance attire for the audition (leotard and tights, no loose clothing). Keep your hair swept cleanly off your face and take off any cumbersome jewelry or accessories. You want your dancing to be the focus.
Bring a bottle of water to keep beside you during the audition. There’ll be plenty of times for you to take a quick water break while others are dancing, and staying hydrated will ensure your body remains in peak performance condition.
It’s easy to get distracted with so many new dancers in the room, especially in the high-pressure situation of an audition. Stay focused on yourself—that's who you’re here for. Stay attentive to your own dancing to showcase your talent.
If you’re auditioning by video, film yourself in a large dance studio or hall with plenty of space. Clear away all clutter so you’re the sole focus in the frame. Film your video in landscape orientation and be certain your entire body is in the frame. Make sure you’re also well lit (not backlit, don’t face the camera into the light), so you’re capturing the clearest picture of your dancing.
You may feel yourself getting stressed about the audition process but don’t forget to have fun. Dancing is joyful and pleasurable, and expressing that joy in an audition is also important. Don’t let your nerves hold you back. Make the most of the experience.
