Dance Classes for Children

AILEY offers a range of classes for young children ages 3–6 at The Ailey School and Ailey Extension. But which is right for you? Explore all of AILEY’s introductions to dance and discover which class is the perfect fit for your child.

First Steps at The Ailey School

This weekly series of fun and creative Saturday classes gives children (ages 3–6) a strong foundation of dance technique while activating their minds and bodies. Every class is led by an instructional team comprised of a primary teacher, one-to-three teaching assistants, and a live accompanist. Teachers encourage students to build a connection between dance, rhythm, and music through exercises that awaken body awareness and nurture creativity.

First Steps classes are split into four age groups:
3-year-olds including boys and girls and ages 4 to 6 for girls only.

Bounding Boys at The Ailey School

For boys ages 4–6, The Ailey School offers a special extension of the First Steps program called Bounding Boys. These uniquely tailored classes offer a creative and athletic experience for boys at a crucial stage in their development. Students develop their coordination and a passion for dance through movement exercises and tumbling techniques. Classes also take place once a week on Saturdays.

Tiny Steps & Mini Movers at Ailey Extension

These 45-minute Sunday classes are designed to engage children ages 2–5 in fun, playful, dance exercises with the supervision and participation of a parent or guardian. Following the guidance of the instructor, children explore imaginative movement using props, which helps enhance the connection between dance, rhythm, and music.

You can sign up for a seasonal session of classes or drop-in for a single class. Perfect if you're looking to share the experience with your child, celebrating their natural ability to move in an expressive way.
