Assistant Lighting Director

This position is responsible for supporting and assisting the Lighting Director in the lighting of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s domestic and international tour performances and any special events. The position is part-time, as the production schedule requires (approximately 20 weeks per calendar year).

Prior experience in a similar position is required. This person must possess strong communication, time management, and interpersonal skills. They must demonstrate a self-motivating, dynamic, and dedicated work ethic and must be willing and able to carry out duties as needed and required to ensure a safe and positive environment for the dancers and crew. They must have the ability to adapt to a wide range of venue types and technical capabilities and ensure the highest quality lighting possible with the resources available. They must demonstrate a history of successful teamwork in a small work group environment where mutual support, flexibility, and trust are key factors.

The Assistant Lighting Director’s direct reports are the Company’s Lighting Director and Technical Director.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Support the accurate development, revision, distribution, maintenance, and archive of the lighting paperwork and drawings of all productions, such as but not limited to: light plots, lineset schedules, ground plans, sections, focus charts, instrument schedules, channel hookups, magic sheets, ballet documentation, cue tracking, ML preset, show files, and rental shop orders for all performance venues of the Company worldwide
  • Support the review of lineset schedules and stage layouts with Head Carpenter and Technical Director
  • Work with guest lighting designers and choreographers to deliver their artistic vision for new works while managing available resources, budgets, and equipment
  • Research and develop lighting information for the recreation of company revivals
  • Supervise and instruct focus of light plot with local and touring crew when needed
  • Support the provision, maintenance, and development of a significant archive, working knowledge and familiarity with performance venues worldwide
  • Support the live performances, communicate abnormalities of focus, cue placement, follow spot implementation, and scenic to production team
  • Positively represent the company in all public places—ALD may be asked to speak on behalf of the company

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or a minimum of four years of live theater, touring dance, concerts, and/or production experience
  • Functional competencies in use and operation of production lighting equipment
  • Advanced knowledge of Vectorworks 2023 or newer, Lightwright 6, ETC EOS Offline Editor
  • Knowledge of moving light programming and lighting networking
  • Computer skills: Mac OS X, Windows OS, MS Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Moving Light Assistant, and Filemaker
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to take initiative, multitask, and work graciously in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work with diplomacy, care, and discretion
  • Experience working with the stagehands in union and non-union environments
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 30 lbs
  • Valid passport
  • Ability to communicate in non-English speaking environments, foreign languages recommended but not required

Compensation

$1,500 per week
