Eleo Pomare’s ballet—dramatizing the change from an agrarian to an industrialized society—is based on Jane Toomer’s Cane, a romantic novel first published in 1923. The narrative concerns a woman who is loved by two men: the white heir to a plantation and a black worker. After killing his rival in a fight, the worker is lynched.
